Speaking from the Heart

Have you ever felt really unsure? Maybe you wanted to help someone feel better but didn’t know the right words to say. This feeling can be very strong when you want to talk about faith.

When I was a school student learning about God, part of our lessons were to give talks at nearby churches. Students like me would talk and then get ideas on how to make our talks better. Sometimes people said nice and helpful things. Other times, not so nice. One time, a student friend of mine got a comment from someone who was asked to talk about the main points of his talk: “I don’t know; I fell asleep.” This was a big reminder to him and us that we had a lot to learn before we could give good talks.

It’s amazing to hear that Paul didn’t use big words or tricky talks. But still, Paul is known as one of the best people who shared the good news about Jesus. How did he do it?

“My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power.” (1 Corinthians 2:4)

Think about this for a moment. Paul told people about Jesus with the power of the Holy Spirit. Paul did not try to show off. He put God first and talked about Jesus saving us. This shows that words are important, but they are not the only thing that matters.

It doesn’t matter if we are talking to many people or just to one friend about God. The important thing is that we help others to meet God and feel His love and being sorry for doing wrong things. It’s not about how well we speak or how smart we are, but how God’s Spirit works through us.

How can you feel God’s help today? Do you sometimes need to be quiet and let God speak through you to others?

Dear God, thank you for your Spirit. Help us open our hearts so you can work through us. We want to help others feel your love. Amen.
